whether it is proposed to start the University rith a Paculty of Arts as well as vith Feculties of Medicine and Engineering, of whether, to begin with, there are merely to be Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, en Arte Faculty being aded later? This is very important with reference to the king of person who is likely to be attracted by the appointment, for many otherwise suitable men might perhaps be deterred if they knew that there was to be no Arts Faculty to begin with,

There is another point. The Principel is to have a free passage provided to Hong Kong, also a tree return passage provided that he does not resign within a year of the date of appointment. It is also stated that marriage is to be no bar. Do the University intend to make any provision for a pessage for the Principal's wife? I know that this is against the practice of Government, but then this appointment is not a Government appointment, and when Universities in Cenade end Australie recruit posts of this kind in gland, free 798es for wife and fenily are practically always provided. Probably in this case passages for children would not be required, because I should ingine the t

the person appointed to the post would prob bly not wish to take

his children to the Colony; but I expect that an applicent for

the post would probably consider thet ne ought to be provided

with a passage for his wife there and hack. At any rate, ve

ought to have clear information on this point, end I should be

intentions glad if you could ascertain by cable what the game of the

University are.

As you know, the University are in a grest hurry to

get e Principal and I believe they sked that the man recruited

might leave Englend in September. This is, of course, impossible

but we have said that we will sot vit. all possible expedition.

As Mr. Cornish says in his letter to Dr. Stulbs, if necessary

the cost of the cable can be charged to the Foard of Education
